Ferrante is such a marvelous writer, and even though the story’s engine has sort of changed directions, the prose, characters, and insights keep the whole going

So it seems our love interest is introduced. I’m sure it won’t end badly…

Also Giovanna is complicit in the lies being told to her, the lies she tells others, and the lies she tells herself are all connected

This is the perfect title for this book holy wow. Teenage girlhood is so marked by anxiety and guilt and repression— why are we served lies instead?

Should I have read the Neapolitan Quartet before this? I honestly don’t know but so far this is looking to be quite a convincing book.

A little confusing, very mysterious, and VERY French. It just has that je ne sais quoi if you know what I mean. (Amnesia plot) Too many characters to keep track of but because of the length of the novel I have a feeling that they will all be part of the protag's journey to self actualization and like a metaphor.

All of the 6 characters are so deeply connected and separated in the ways they are rooted in reality, how they process emotions, how they regard others and other various facets of the self. Absolutely fascinating how woolf's mind came up with this while also writing amazing prose

Hot hot take I think a24 should adapt this— it feels like a film! Visceral and gritty and fueled by emotion

“I always forget that fear is a conquerable thing but I learn it over and over again and that, I guess, is better than never learning it.”

This narration is beautiful— very american gothic and vaguely threatening

One of the things I find the most interesting about urban planning is that it is a constantly changing field. The history remains the same but the present keeps on moving forward-- Some of the ideas and predictions in this book from 2013 sadly do not ring true but it is sooooo interesting nonetheless!
