This book is really good at showing “wrong-ness” and evil otherworldly creatureliness. I can SEE the blood morphing into a figure in my mind. I can SEE the boys eyes opening and they are pitch black. So few of the fantasy books I’ve been reading have decided to go this direction and I am HERE for it

First person, sister dynamic is similar to ACOTAR (ugh. Please stop), vibes are similar to Song of the Forever Rains, writing and sentence craft are typical of a self-published book (not a problem for a lot of people, but I find myself getting bogged down in it). Seriously considering dnf-ing, but we’ll see if the 30% chapter 10 mark kicks off

5 POVs, and two of them are 1st person (😒), one of which is M and one of which is F - to make it even harder to keep track, I suppose.

So far, it’s giving Poppy War (👎🏻)….but it’s also giving Priory of the Orange Tree (👍🏻). I’m engaged and intrigued.

This version of “witchy” is a lot more palatable to my tastes than Threadneedle: ballgowns and captains of the guard, opera houses and horse-drawn carriages, mud and trees and cobblestone streets….emphasis more on the relationships and politics of a story than a how-to manual for being a witch in the modern world.
