This book deals with a really heavy topic for middle school. The idea that when people with power in our country speak with hate about other races or religions it makes other people feel it's okay to do that too.

Markus Zusak's books just feel so heavy. His writing manages to convey this weight upon his characters. It's just such a physical feeling when reading his books. I don't know how to properly explain it, but it just feels depressing/exhausting. That makes it sound like I hate it, but I don't.
