Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion
“How much greater is the God we have, than the one we think we have. More than anything else, the truth of God seems to be about a joy that is a foreigner to disappointment and disapproval.”

“The worst thing that a divorce does to a person isn’t that it makes all the time that you devoted to the relationship feel wasted, but that it steals all the plans you had for the future.”

“The truth is, of course, that if people were really as happy as they look on the internet, they wouldn’t spend so much damn time on the internet, because none who is having a really good day spends half the day taking pictures of themselves.”

“It’s hard to explain to a twelve year old that ‘when you were little and I walked too fast you would run to catch up with me and take hold of my hand,’ and that those were the best moments of my life, your fingertips in the palm of my hand, before you knew how many things I’d failed at.” 😭

“No one goes to a psychologist to talk about all the times they weren’t hit in the head by a swing as a child. Parents are defined by their mistakes.”

Omg— listening to the audiobook, the real estate agent reminds me distinctly of Kristen Wiig as ‘Target Lady’ on SNL 🤣🤣🤣

“There is a mythical element to childhood, it seems, that stays with us always. When we are young, we consume the world in great gulps, and it consumes us, and everything is mysterious and alive and fills us with desire and wonder...”

I find it hard to believe that people who have lived and worked together continuously for as long as these astronauts still wouldn’t know the outlines of each other’s lives

Sullivan: “...a geomagnetic storm maybe? But ...it would have to be one hell of a storm. Historically something like this would be brief, correlating with a solar event...”
Harper: “Has that happened on this scale before?”
Sullivan: “Years ago a magnetic storm upset the power grid in Canada ...but Ivanov’s right, nothing I’ve ever heard of would last this long and disrupt both hemispheres.”

“...maybe in the end it’s the same thing... but with him you never fell [in love], you marched straight in... falling is the part that takes your breath away. It’s the part when you can’t believe the person standing in front of you both exists and happened to wander into your path. It’s supposed to make you feel lucky to be alive exactly when and where you are.”

“Gus still thought he was missing something, some special piece other people had, the thing that made people stay— and it broke my heart a little.”
THIS is what it’s like when we assume that others judge us as harshly as we judge ourselves. People who’ve suffered abuse or have abandonment issues tend to negative mind read or get defensive. It’s refreshing to see this dealt with mid-story.

“In my own story I didn’t want to be the heroine who let some silly miscommunication derail somethings obviously good. But in my real life, I felt like I’d rather risk that and keep my dignity...”
This trope is probably one of my biggest annoyances in romance novels. I’m trying to decide if it’s better that the author is at least self aware here, or if it makes it more obnoxious.

“What’s in this?”
“Vodka,” Maggie said airily ticking the ingredients off on her fingers. “Coconut rum, blue curaçao, pineapple juice, a splash of regular rum... do you like it?”
“It’s great!” It smelled like an open 😂😂😂bottle of nail polish remover.

“It all made sense at once, the hesitancy and deflection, the mistrust of people, the fear of commitment... From the time he was a kid, no one had chosen him and he was embarrassed by that —like it meant something about him. I wanted to tell him it didn’t, that it wasn’t because he was broken but because everyone else was.”

“It was called the big lie technique... just sound like you know what you’re talking about, as if you’re citing real facts. Talk very fast. Weave your lies into the shape of a conspiracy theory and repeat your assertions over and over again. Those who want an excuse to hate or blame... will leap at a simple neat explanation for the way the world is. Those types will never call you on the facts.”
