All I have to say so far: Capitalism is bad and the meat industry is vile. Let’s be real though, that’s just stating the obvious. I am liking Upton Sinclair’s use of details and similes when he describes things. You really experience the sense that he was intending for the reader to feel, which does not always feel the most comfortable. I admire how he is able to get this reaction out of me though.

The first chapter was just introducing the characters for the most part. Hopefully the plot starts soon because that felt like the longest beginning.

So far, the book is not as hard to understand as the Scarlet Letter was. However, I was excited to read the Great Gatsby. However, this book was written by a socialist, so it’s really easy for me to connect with the author’s purpose. Incredibly slow read too. I actually think this book takes longer to read per page than the Scarlet Letter, and that’s saying a lot. I’ll most likely finish chapter 1 tomorrow.

I’m seeing the plot begin to develop fully now, and I’m so here for the mother daughter tension 😩

This last chapter was SO GOOD! All the characters are growing so much as people. This quote on page 140 was also well appreciated. “It is to the credit of human nature, that, except where it’s selfishness is brought into play, it loves more readily than it hates. Hatred (...) will even be transformed to love, unless the change be impeded by a continually new irritation of the original feeling of hostility.”

The plot is beginning to pick up quickly in the past few chapters, so I am intrigued. I am extremely curious about how this story will end as drama is beginning to slowly unfurl between characters. Where could this all go?

So far so good. It’s getting better as the story goes on as I’m beginning to understand what is actually happening. I heard the end gets juicy, so I’m excited!

The past two chapters have been much better than the start of this novel. I truly hope I begin to form more of a connection with Hester (or Pearl).

Very dry so far, and I have no feeling of fulfillment after I finish reading. To be fair, the setting is supposed to be very dreary and the tone is bleak. However, that’s not an excuse for a reader to be disinterested. I don’t have a positive outlook of the book as of now, but I can only hope that my opinion changes for the sake of my time and energy.

The first hint of drama, but nothing jaw dropping. I’m assuming that this is build up for the character change that is coming soon. I NEED DRAMA NOW THOUGH

Good! A lot of backstory and character development, but that’s standard for the beginning of almost any book.

I finished the story itself, and I am unsure whether I will continue the rest of the notes and documents provided in this edition of the novel. I believe that I may only skim the rest.

I’m wondering where the book is going at this point considering how short it is. Plot twist perhaps? We shall see

Nothing too remarkable so far, but I’m definitely intrigued.
