If there was any doubt this book was written by a man, the following would cement it: “... ultimately she had to let herself be fucked by the cabdriver... .” That phrase effectively strips any power from the woman in this horrifying transaction.

This book reminds me, in some ways, of Margaret Atwood's The Blind Assassin. There is the same sense of a lost world, of the need to adapt to unimaginable circumstances, and the use of science fiction to underscore the story.

A riveting, gritty, heart-breaking look at life in San Francisco in 1876. Emma Donoghue continues her habit of looking with clear eyes at misogyny and its ugly details, and immersing readers in the complicated emotions it evokes. So far, very good indeed.

Let's see if this is decent "Outlander" methadone.

The writing is a little clunky, but the characters are basically likable. I'm enjoying the almost Existentialist slide of Bell into Laura's life.

This must have been how many women felt after reading "The Feminine Mystique" for the first time: liberated. My sensitive/highly-reactive introvert temperament is likely hard wired into my brain. There are strong evolution psychology theories to explain our necessity: fortune doesn't always favor the bold; sometimes they don't observe misfortune coming. My 20% of the population can stop trying to toughen up!
