Good character development, but a slow start generally.

Great characters, and some interesting things happening, but not a page turner. Not even clear what the narrative arc will be.

He’s developing interesting characters, though it’s a slow burn. No sense at all of the plot yet.

I'm not engaging much yet with the slow buildup. Some repetition of events and language is also distracting (so much smucking).

Still waiting for the build up to lead somewhere.

So far I am enjoying it. The mysterious painting leaves interesting questions. The only downside is that the Norman character is almost too evil. It actually makes him a boring character.

A weird King trope is shooting rats at the dump

This has been great from the beginning, with a mystery angle that is less common in early King books.

There is a lot going on, but none of it is generating suspense or even much of a plot.

This book is slower than most of the others. Not clear what all the scattered narratives are building toward.

Fine so far, though not grabbing me. Seems like the books of this era (e.g. Cujo and Christine) have long slow parts until the plot accelerates.

For the first 100 pages, this is fundamentally a book about marital problems. Alcoholism is a close second, which makes one wonder about King's own situation at the time.

I usually love Perez-Reverte's style but I am waiting for this to shift away from not-very-interesting gangster novel.
