Our English heroine has landed herself in a northern factory town and has a lot of rabble rousing to do. I always wonder if these lady novelists realize that they tend to write about women as if women are not too good at comprehending their own best interests.

I don’t know which way this is going yet. I’m seeing signs of uppity women. Too early to conclude anything.

Saint Augustine and Dr Jekyll both prayed God to save them from the killer inside them.

Outstanding. I seriously doubt any novel written in the 20th century was superior to this. By the last page I could make legit arguments to justify all three main characters' conduct.

This is hilarious

Hardy's extremely underrated. He doesn't have enough fans if GR is anything to go by. The blurb on my copy includes lies about this being a 'feminist, erotic thriller.' Nothing could be more dishonest. If nothing else, there is zero sex. That I can tell you.
