The descriptions of Vic’s printing plant is surprisingly absorbing.

LOL! Highsmith viewed women as mental children. “It was against Vic's principles, as an adult, to be firm with another adult. Granted Melinda wasn't an adult, he still intended to go on treating her as one. The only new idea the psychiatrist put into his head was that Melinda, like many women who have a child, might be ‘finished’ with him as a man and as a husband, now that he had given her the child.”

Part of this consists of letters written by CS Lewis. They form the most readable part of the whole thing

Just to confirm, this book is exactly what I expected, namely a philosophical statement about the superiority of books over people. Moreover, the statement is convincing (as if I didn't already agree).

Really bad. Only continuity out of my duty to the club but it’s basically the memoir of a male feminist who later meets CS Lewis and has some kind of religious conversion. God almighty I hope it improves

The first long detailed description of a meal happens in chapter 3. You’ll be shocked to know that they were eating gazpacho, and evidently this is a cold soup, which the narrator notified us was cold. But seriously this is a very fun and funny book
