Strange Dogs 5/5
Really liked this one, about the first settlers on Laconia & the time right after the military (Duarte et al) get the orbital construction gates turned on. The child of a scientist from the first wave discovers “dogs” that can fix things— including the dead. Vaguely unsettling and also quite heartbreakingly beautiful.

Fairly bored so far.
This reads like a stream of consciousness diary, almost no dialogue.
Finding it difficult to relate to the main character as she so desperately wants a child.
Not looking forward to finishing this one.

Your empire’s hands look a lot cleaner when you get to dictate where history begins, and what parts of it don’t count.

The Vital Abyss: 3.5/5
A story about one of the researchers from Toth Station who participated in the protomolecule experiment on Eros. In addition to providing some backstory to the character, this short story also delves into the present where they are being held in a nameless prison. This particular researcher determines that the protomolecule built a gate and is rewarded by earning some “freedom”.
