Aron was content to be a part of his world, but Cal must change it.

I feel that a man is a very important thing-maybe more important than a star. This is not theology. I have no bent toward gods. But I have a new love for that glittering instrument, the human soul. It is a lovely and unique thing in the universe. It is always attacked and never destroyed-because ‘thou mayest”.

But ‘Thou mayest!’ Why, that makes a man great, that gives him stature with the gods, for in his weakness and his filth and his murder of his brother he has still the great choice. He can choose his course and fight it through and win.

The American Standard translation orders men to triumph over sin, and you can call sin ignorance. The King James translation makes a promise in ‘thou shaltz’, meaning that men will surely triumph over sin. But the Hebrew word , the word timshel-thou mayest-that gives a choice. It might be the most important word in the world.

“I will warn you now that not their blood but your suspicion might build evil in them. They will be what you expect of them… I think when a man finds good or bad in his children he is only seeing what he planted in them after they cleared the womb.” “You can’t make a race horse of a pig.” “No,” said Samuel, “but you can make a very fast pig.”

“Go through the motions, Adam.” “What motions?“ “Act out being alive like a play and after a while, a long while, it will be true.” “Why should I?” Adam asked Samuel, was looking at the twins. “You’re going to pass some thing down no matter what you do or if you do nothing. Even if you let yourself go fallow, the weeds will grow and the brambles. Something will grow.“

An ache was on the top of his stomach, an apprehension that was like a sick thought. It was a Weltschmerz… the world sadness that rises into the soul like a gas and spreads despair so that you probe for the offending event and can find none.

I guess I’d a man had to shuck off everything he had, inside and out, he’d manage to hide a few little sins somewhere for his own discomfort.

Ana and Ola were invited to Google headquarters…once installed at Google, they would be able to turn Ana’s vision of democratic access to official statistics into reality. The Gapminder Foundation sold the moving bubble source code to Google…and helped create and shape Google Public Date, an application that makes it easier to find and display statistics.

If we had been capitalists at best, we would surely have jumped at the chance to sign contracts with all these interest parties, but…our vision of liberating this data was too huge for us to manage in our own. We agreed that the best thing would be if Google were to steal our ideas, because they did not charge users for their services.

Colored bubble graph: every bubble is a country and the color denotes its continent. The vertical axis shows life expectancy and the horizontal shoes per capita income… I went on to explain the irrelevance of a binary division…also argued that disease burden gradually changed as economic development progressed.

Education about global health was not about filling knowledge gaps. It’s proper function was to remove preconceived opinions, particularly that the West is more developed… The other key finding was that even students with a strong interest in the world around them did not necessarily know more about it than their less-interested peers.

My students…clung to the idea that the ethical choice was to treat those patients who had managed to get to the hospital as effectively as possible. They would not take on board the fact that for the majority of patients in poor countries, to travel was not an option.

I was gradually losing interest in the medical, toxicological, and biochemical aspects of the disease. Instead, I was keen to look into the underlying causation. The agricultural economy was driving a vicious cycle of deprivation and extreme poverty.

It wasn’t just the woman’s insight that saved me from death by machete, but the way she expressed the logic behind her argument. She changed her fellow villagers’ way of thinking so that they could see that their fears were the outcome of hasty, emotional responses…it was my memory of these women that would later make me confront the opinions of my students who argued that the poor were happy with their lot.

If it had not been for Doctor Tall, they would have been forced to carry their dead all day and nights. Of all the suffering I have witnessed, this particular example stands out as the most powerful and tangible example of extreme poverty: people are robbed of the most fundamental elements of divinity by sheer lack of money.

What you did for this woman was…beyond any expectations of people here in our remote and extremely poor village…After her death, you personally expressed your sorrow to the family. Then you walked out into the yard…to speak with the driver of the vaccination van. It was just about to leave but you ordered the driver to wait and to drive the dead woman’s body home for burial.

During…35 years, Mozambique endured a decade of bloody civil war and coped with a very serious epidemic of HIV. Despite this, it’s child mortality fell almost twice as fast as Sweden’s had almost one hundred years earlier. Africa is catching up with Europe…due to accepting evidence-based policies and investment tangents.

Numbers are so important in ethical discussions. It is misleadingly easy to define what is right and wrong when you speak about one patient at a time.

Time and time again, my African colleagues have surprised me by demonstrating how my mind keeps following the same thought patterns as most Europeans when they arrive in Africa. Their intentions…[were] to remind me…that however engaged we are in the struggle to free Africa of misery, we seem hopelessly lost when faced with an Africa where people have the same dreams for their lives as we do for ours.
