The American Standard translation orders men to triumph over sin, and you can call sin ignorance. Numbers are so important in ethical discussions. It is misleadingly easy to define what is right and wrong when you speak about one patient at a time.

Time and time again, my African colleagues have surprised me by demonstrating how my mind keeps following the same thought patterns as most Europeans when they arrive in Africa. Their intentions…[were] to remind me…that however engaged we are in the struggle to free Africa of misery, we seem hopelessly lost when faced with an Africa where people have the same dreams for their lives as we do for ours.
