Switching back and forth between two different stories and to make it worse, the 1916 stuff starts with him injured and jumps back to before the injury.

Ashley is severely tormented by the death of his wife and son, plus filled with guilt over marital problems that were occurring.

Emmy is driven to marry and gain the independence, extras, and children that come with being a wife. She knows that she needs to take that new challenge for herself, but is finding that she will need to sacrifice parts of herself that are deeply important to do so. She is still committed. She knows that she was only a child to Ashley.

The description of Moriarity and the manipulations he manages just through talking perfectly describe a maleficent criminal mastermind. You can feel the emotional pull that he is exhibiting through his words. Narration makes it difficult to differentiate between Charlotte's thoughts and words.

39 minutes into chapter 6. 3 stars

I find that the story is dragging and the narrator voice makes Courtney sound like a young girl. I suspect the mystery is interesting, but I don't know if I am going to get through it to find out. On the relationship side, it is developing quickly and expectantly in both, much like a surprise unexplained attraction.

Overly suggestive and crude steampunk tale going in all kinds of crazy directions with a heroine that can't settle on what she wants.

Narrator voices dialog well, but the narration would be better in a gothic or mystery novel.

Allene is a spoiled debutant who just managed to rope in her former friends that she had been barred from for 4 years. Jasper is resentful of his treatment, but needs her connections to get where he wants to go and had expected him to be marrying Allene. Birdie is resentful since she and her mother were cast out while her mother was pregnant. Birdie is dying from Radium she uses in a watch factory.

Abigail holds serious grudges and it's not quite real that she blames people like Michael and Poppy. She has not forgiven Poppy for the situation that led to her injury.

I find that I am generally unsatisfied with the story. Lots of sex stuff. I feel a little like "Poof" they are in love although I can't articulate why.

Narrator voice enhances eerie feeling of gothic mystery. Hazel is on submarine heading to Romania and is probing to figure out what is going on and why her uncle is less than forthcoming with information.

Beautiful prose of the present life misadventures mixed in with a telling of the parts of his life where Daniel fell in love with Sophia. He weaves in the universal truths of the folly of youth and the power of observation.

The set up for Seth and Eva is overwhelming and makes the interactions by Seth toward Alice strange.

Reggie is rediscovering people he knew as a child and tries to deal with his drinking blackouts. He also wants to raise hunters. He just saved Alice and her household by waking everyone and rescuing Alice who became trapped. Now they will stay in his house. He also saw someone sneaking away from the house just before the fire started.

Lots of telling not showing and I had trouble following the ever changing parameters of her experiment.

Finished with book 8 Veiled in Moonlight.

Finished book 7. She proposed.

Played audio faster but realized I would probably regret the time to finish.

Cate essentially being alone except for her dog does not allow any real depth of character and makes everything seem so bland.

Cate is doing research, but she was 40% of the way through the book before she even gets the watch and then it is still a bit before anything odd starts to happen. It is dragging incredibly and I wonder if I should continue or abandon the book.

The story is dragging along quite a lot. There is not an efficiency of words and a great deal of detail about Kate's life and lack of other interactions with people.

Finished book 6 "From the Ashes" -- of their previous relationship

Got to the point that both fell into an underground lake and realized that I was just tired of all the teenage banter and stuff in the relationship between these two friends and decided I was tired of waiting for the main part of the book to start.

on track for 3 stars. I like the mystery of what happened to her father, but most of the book thus far has been disjointed relationship stuff and jumping to the steam. They try to paint Lily as independent minded, but it doesn't really show through. Grey is just a horny guy suddenly smitten?

Narrative draws you in balancing the reality of a very real seeming person/ ghost versus her training to understand he is a figment of her mind.

I get frustrated that Caro's experiments are far beyond what makes any sense and wonder if I should keep reading.

She is strongly scientifically minded and her mother was mad so she is always afraid she will be labeled mad. Of course, she doesn't have enough of a dowry to be of interest to Tallis. Everything with him is about the Tallis name.

He is nothing but a lust crazed man. Why was he so driven to her?
