Two Envelopes And A Phone is 12% done with The End of the World: and Other Catastrophes
The first story - 'The End of the World' by Helen Sutherland - was perfect. The bar has been set, and I think this is going to be a great collection.

Wow. It turns out that I have read a lot of ‘End of the World’ novels, as discussed quickly by Mike Ashley in his Intro to this book. And if I had not focused on Radium Age SF over the last two years, I couldn’t say that. I would even say 1904-1933 is some of the best Apocalypse reading in SF. Anyway, now for some short story versions of ultimate doom. I’m pumped!

This will be the first book I read due to it being recommended in 101 Horror Books To Read Before You’re Murdered, or whatever the heck it’s called. That reading guide first appeared as part of my Updates feed on April Fool’s Day, and I was halfway convinced someone was having me, all of us?, on; but it’s a real book, and I have it now.

Got a lot done. Gonna finish it soon. It’s strange. I like it more than Suffer the Flesh, anyway.

Awright, I have not really enjoyed this so far - but Gregory Benford, in his Intro to my edition, did advise me to skip to page 79, the start of Part Five. I didn’t do that, and I’ve suffered for it. I presume things improve from this point on; I don’t think I’ve ever read the Intro of a novel that told me to skip a huge chunk at the beginning. Until now.

I feel like some SF, this collection seems suitably geared to the Halloween-approaches season, and I'm having fun reading lots of short stories in between each novel. So bring on the ends of the world!

Okay, one story left - 'The Ghost Breakers'. the ones just before it - 'Twice-Killed Corpse' and 'A Lock of Satan's Hair' - were two of my favourites.

That might be it for tonight, or I’ll squeeze in one more story. The next one is the tale that gives the book itself its title. The fun part is, I don’t remember any of these stories from when I read them decades ago, except ‘Death is a White Rabbit’. (I wish I could remember the story of every book I ever read…until I do a re-read, and then I’m glad it faded away!).

Thoroughly enjoying my re-read, after about 37 years. I think the idea was to put some of Brown’s creepiest stories together in this entry in the series. Job well done!

This will be a re-read, and I’m going to go to it just ahead of Bootlegger’s Daughter. I had such fun with Sex Life on the Planet Mars, that I can’t resist more Fredric Brown short stories. I used to own the soft-cover; now I have this nice hardcover, but in this case I think the soft-cover actually as the cooler cover. I do recall loving all the stories in this book.

Okay, so, I may not finish this tonight like I thought I would. But the finale should be a treat in the morning - it’s a great Spy novel. I’m just a bit tired.

Terrific, so far. Probably going to top the only other by the author I've read up until now, At Risk. I don't read near as much spy fiction as I used to, but when I finally do, it's still a lot of fun, a very specific sort of suspense and cat-and-mouse.

Alright. Here’s what’s going on. It still stands that any novels I read in September, except for one Ellery Queen novel (already done), must be by women. But, I am taking a mid-month diversion to short stories, by one of my favourite authors, as a sort of palate cleanser/reward, after reading a very troubling Extreme Horror novel. I want light snacks of SF and Pulp Crime and a very familiar vibe.

‘The False Key’ by Maria Edgeworth was exactly the story I needed this evening, after deadline with an Extreme Horror novel hours ago. I feel better. And I already love this book.

Time for a Spy story - and hopefully not one like The Mind Readers by Allingham, which I read recently. And hopefully this book will not remind of the last book I read, which I am now recovering from! I should be re-reading a Wodehouse pick right now, except I am supposed to be reading only women authors until Oct. 1st. Gonna stay true to that.

Nervous about the splatter level, but I got through This Symbiotic Fascination recently, and that was pretty vile. This one isn’t too long, so before I know it I’ll be done.
