Courtney at work likes Book 4 in the series the best. I’ve been a Book 3 guy so far - but I think this one will top it. Loving it.

Courtney at work put me onto this series, and I'm happy she did. She also wants me to continue with that Yarros/Fourth Wing stuff, and that's not gonna happen. But I will miss these characters...while at the same time I like finishing series (the few I track) and saying goodbye. Definite conclusions are welcome.

I’m pretty hooked on this, the plot is quite fascinating. I’ll finish it up tomorrow - it’s been a long, strange day, and once again books have been the escape. Even better when they’re good!

This is a good one. Maybe a little easy to figure out…of course I say that now, and get the cutlery and a napkin ready for eating my words later. Anyway, it’s a bit like The Bride Wore Black by Woolrich, which is fine with me. A little bit Japrisot, or maybe Pascal Garnier, a non-Maigret Simenon, all that kind of stuff. I’m now very happy I’ve got The Master Key by her, as well.

Her story in an anthology of Japanese Crime & Mystery stories I read recently was not my favourite, was more like a Horror tale trapped in a “Detective fiction” anthology, was icky and “get it off my plate!”-y, and even kind of pissed me off. But, somehow, all of that made me want to read her stuff again. I’ve got to see this weirdness in a novel!

Is there anyone more reliable for a good time than Agatha Christie? ‘A Christmas Tragedy’ - a Miss Marple story- is one of her Yuletide-related fictions I had not encountered yet, but I’m glad it got included in this anthology. Pretty cool story - and not all the stories in this book have been sounding my siren, as it were. An okay collection, so far - but maybe we’ve turned a corner in terms of the dazzle effect…

I like it. Mind-control/mind-manipulation/thought-influencing stuff is always my bag. I think this will remain fairly claustrophobic, too. And it feels older than it actually is; this feels like Uncle Silas, or something. Okay, not quite that dusty and “19th” century, but definitely a throwback in terms of the Gothic vibe. Onions is an intriguing writer.

The short story by Oliver Onions - Benlian - that I just read in The Night Wire inspired me to pursue more by him. Widdershins was a must, but Editor notes on The Night Wire also suggested this novel as worth a look. I’ve only read a few pages, but evil hypnotists - or even sketchy mesmerists - are practically a fetish with me, and to find out that this is what I’m in for here is a bonus delight.

Some of my fave musical talents: Speckled Red, Magic Sam, Leela James, Big Jay McNeely, Jimmie Lunceford, Nina Simone, Anita O'Day, Jimi, the list goes on. A great Fantasy novel about music is Glimpses, by Lewis Shiner. Some other "music" novels I love: Killer Tune, Death of an Unsigned Band, Death on the Down Beat. Anyway, this book starts a little like Aronovitz's Phantom Effect, but it will be different...

Finally getting to this. I think it’s going to be a very interesting read. I studied the history of popular music with Rob Bowman when I went to university, and even before that had fallen in love with jazz and blues. This book keeps my Arts & Entertainment theme alive for a while longer.

It’s a lot of fun. The “how can there be no footprints in the snow?!” conundrum is a bit familiar - I just dealt with it, in Rim of the Pit - but who cares.

Good couple of chapters - I'm not really gonna get far with this until later, but I'm intrigued. It also stays within my "Arts & Entertainment" theme, for Mysteries and Horror, because we have a movie actress planning to appear in a play.

I've got a couple Mystery novels set at Christmas to get to - I used to avoid them, but now they seem kind of fun. And of course I've got the stories in Crime for Christmas as stalking stuffers. (What?)
