This is an exceptionally well chosen study of Manitoba's personalities, cultures, places, and activities in 1979. It is a far more intimate, individual portrait of us that does not resemble a tourguide of the same few wornout places. The writing and photographs are equally poignant and stimulating, making it clear that the personal centre of our people was this book's goal and this comes across successfully indeed!

Excellent, with more inspiriation than I anticipated, along with Jann Arden's much loved humour.

It is my pleasure to read animal advocate, Clarence Tillenius' beautiful words about how and why he painted, harmonizing with his majestic portraiture themselves. I am proud of his broad Canadian legacy in our museums and galleries. It is especially wonderful that he is a fellow Manitoban. He went beyond painting animal pictures. He showed us their story in a wild world parallel to ours, among lives equally rich.

This prairie Canadian overcoming grief and changes, with her spiritual gifts, memories, friends, and relatives is an unexpected pleasure. I did not expect to find a Corey Hart fan protagonist either, that is for sure.

I always want to hear from readers who buy paper books because the stories of how they procured them are fun and uncanny. This for instance, is a book I saw in the free or trade library of my Dad's community. I enjoyed Father's Day with him first, then left a few book items and scooped up what looked good to me. I couldn't have imagined finding an aura-seeing prairie Canadian, who is a Corey Hart fan in the 1980s!

A recent 2011 Canadian novel, about a girl able to see auras, who grieves her recently ascended Mom, and is a Corey Hart fan? This book was made for me! I must josh Allison that Corey fans would choose something less mainstream than "Sunglasses At Night" to represent fandom.

The Red Lake, Ontario gold rush began in Christmas 1925. It is neat that the family names of the first mine claim stakers are the names of the nearby towns I know. This region was populated and brought into civilization from this gold rush. The mining continued long afterwards, some still as of Ruth Weber Russell's writing in June 1987.

My Mom's childhood friend, Ruth Weber Russell is a wonderful writer and enlightening researcher. I would not have known or indeed her authoring purpose must have been in 1987, that no one knows of the Red Lake, Ontario gold rush at all. I was astonished to learn it surpassed the more popular Klondike gold rush in Yukon Territory. This is the importance and permanent treasure of writing very local history in books.

A wonderful history of Red Lake, Ontario's gold rush by my Mom's dear childhood friend, Ruth Weber Russell. It is a priviledge to find it among my Mom's belongings at my home and to dig in and read it.

This whole book is fantastic. I love Margaret Laurence's writing, humour, and love for Manitoba and nature. However, I did not expect to love these people and stories as much as I am, positively savouring them. Where I had expected dreariness and sourness, there are loving families and an intelligent good child growing up happily. A protagonist who is not isolated is refreshing. This surpasses "The Stone Angel"!

This is not the cover I have, from my dear, generous friend Kerri. It is a pretty red drawing, although this photograph of a road and trees ahead is nice too.

I have five pages to go and then only the brief "Jason's Quest" section. I do not want to rush reading this special looking children's book that I managed to procure. It was fine to read Clara Thomas' essays of the novels I have not read yet because they are dense enough to leave my own discoveries to me in the future. "A Bird In The House" and "The Deviners" are left. I'll likely read "Jason's Quest" in between.

I am enjoying the greatest reading pleasure, reading this magnificent book with my good friends, Kerri and Shirin! I laughed so hard at one hilarious observation on Maggie Stiefvater's part; that my face, pillow, and glasses were wet with amused tears! While I got up to clean my reading glasses, it took a good 20 minutes before I stopped laughing and rereading a little flower delivery scene that I found hilarious!
