We have to accept the historical conditions of our existence. We can try to understand and to interpret them; but we cannot change them.

[Todesangst]. And with this life itself is raised above the realm of mere ‘care’ [Sorge, anguish, apprehension] (Heidegger).”104 Of the grimness of Geworfenheit, Cassirer observed that, for Heidegger: “To be thrown into the stream of time is a fundamental and inalterable feature of our human situation. We cannot emerge from this stream and we cannot change its course.

Concerning Heidegger’s fixation with death, Cassirer says: “this might be a very ancient way of thinking, this might be found by some to be very heathen, but it is the truly philosophical solution, which takes death itself up among the realm of necessity, and through this thought of necessity, through amor fati, it is able to liberate us from anxiety about death

In the Philebus Socrates says that the ridiculous (γέλοιος) is a kind of vice, the opposite of which is the condition of the soul captured in the Delphic inscription “Know thyself.” The opposite of the inscription would be not to know oneself. The person who does not know himself makes himself ridiculous, the cause of laughter. /by thinking himself to be richer than he is or / to be more handsome than he is.

Jorge feared the second book of Aristotle because it perhaps really did teach how to distort the face of every truth, so that we would not become slaves to our ghosts. Perhaps the mission of those who love mankind is to make people laugh at the truth, to make truth laugh [fare ridere la verità], because the only truth lies in learning to free ourselves from insane passion for the truth.

There are a nr of features of Peirce’s conception of explanation, features that are reflected in Eco’s conception of epistemic justification: (1) there is a structure to what constitutes an explanation, (2) explanations have an irrdcble axiological aspect (they are the result of interested inquiry &involve surprise; / they are a matter of what would arouse a need to be explained), and (3) / involve categorization(s).

coast; does that small promontory count as being part of the coast?)
2 points are raised here: 1 the knowing relation is, as just stated, triadic nt dyadic, &, 2, the knowing relation requires agreement on the content of knowing (that is, on just what it is that is known). Both are a matter of negotiation, in particular semiotic negotiation, or agreement about signs, including what is signified & how it is signified.

Knowing the length of the coast of Britain involves a set of beliefs (or acts of believing) and states of affairs (facts about the world), but in addition it involves agreeing upon standards of measurement as well as what exactly we count as being part of the coast itself. (Does this particular stretch of sand that lies under the water half of the year count as being part of the

In 1967 Benoit Mandelbrot published a paper in which he asked, “How long is the coast of Britain?” Mandelbrot’s answer to the question was that there is no single correct answer.

A very young child sometimes says “given that . . .” (to the excitement of its parents) in order to reach certain conclusions. In this way the child is practicing the logical method of inference (if it rains then the ground will be wet, and it is raining, so the ground will be wet, and it’s a good idea not to go outside with bare feet)

And he replied: “By asking before dying that I might have a civil funeral. And so I am no more, but I have set an example for others."
