Not sure I can finish this one. There's just something off about it

the backstory about Caro is dropped, i guess? for this boring rebellion with months and months between strikes zzzzzzzz

aaaand now the politician Naxids are “taking over” without military power? or a backup plan? what the actual fuck. this book is terrible.

mutiny? is it possible something is actually about to happen in these boring pages?
okay wtf, the Naxids are incredibly stupid at firing solutions (but able to mutiny all these ships) and Martinez is just destroying all the incoming missiles give me a break. and now a race the Naxids can’t win, as tho they can’t tell how far ahead Martinez is? this is dumb.

a simulated maneuver (maneuvers?). yawn. Martinez having an “idea”; any idea is meant to paint this yahoo as a genius?

all that’s happened is this space yacht rescue. what the hell is the story here. just boring shit about politics and caste.

so this “superior” alien race has conquered the galaxy and instead thjs book is prattling on about Martinez wanting a more prestigious job. tell me about this goddamn mysterious aliens who rule all but have all killed themselves now?!

i don’t like Martinez. and parts of this writing.

i’m back and forth about whether i like this book or not. “Maranic Town” is an awful name, the syllables all clash with each other. and just finding out Terrans are from Earth and feeling like I need to go back to the beginning to apply this insight to what was already said but i won’t bc that’s fucking annoying!

Alright, story picking up and am kind of enjoying it.
But fuck, Martinez is a world class POS. Being angry that someone has issues to deal with and you didn't get laid, then calling your rebound 'refreshingly uncomplicated' is such a baffling series of backhanded blows.
I'm sick of his constant woomanizing, judging and plotting to climb the social ladder. Sula's part of the story better be tripple worth it.

Damnit. I was ready to yeet this, but that was an awesome and brutal flashback. Prose might still be very basic, but that has the makings of a very interesting backstory.
Now to weather through these present day skirtchasing, parties and dates.

I'll try to do one last reading session with this before I yeet it.
I no longer care about the interesting setting or upcoming civil unrest.
I'm sick and tired of half the text revolving around the physical descriptions of woman or how to get in their pants and the other half not even being written that well.
Ugh. Dissapointments.

Alright, I am accepting both Martinez as well as Sula are deeply flawed and, to a level, unlikeable characters.
I'll just go along with the detailed interesting world building and see where the scheming, plotting plot goes.

Finally, finally starting this, and what a great intro that was.
A lot of exposition but told very artfully so I don't mind.
I do hope Martinez isn't the protagonist, what an ass.:P

Wow. I am liking this book so far. I read another book in this series, out of sequence, but loved it anyway. I wanted to start at the beginning this time, thus my reading of this book.

Up to now there is mostly world-building and some Character background. It reminds me a bit of Scalzi's "Collapsing Empire", both in tone and, to a certain degree, in setting. But it predates that series, of course.

Got to beginning of chapter 5 when had to return. It’s okay, think I’ll continue sometime.

Still a very slow plot and no core sci-fi ideas being presented.

I am about 30% into this book and cannot see how will it turn into a sci-fi book. So far almost nothing. Will read though to decide if I should ditch the series.

This sci-fi is softer than the ample curves of our hero’s girlfriend. Mil sci-fi writers seem to get an awful lot of credit for being able to detail the mechanics of a space ship without giving any attention to how the mechanics of society might be 4000 years in the future, when humankind has been conquered by immortal space slugs and forcibly assimilated into an incomparably old and elaborate imperial hierarchy.

Can’t get into it. Abandoned.
