Eureka! In chapter 4, we learn the importance of happiness to neural networking. I learned that when you "get it," that burst of dopamine causes new dendrites to grow and connect; practice repeats the process.

Chapter 3 discusses the "second dart." I originally learned this as the second arrow - replaying events and reacting to them long after any real danger has passed. Also discussed is the balance between the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems.

Chapter 2 introduces suffering and its sources. "When you understand why you feel (badly), those feelings have less power over you." Our brains work hard to hang on to stability in a constantly changing world through approaching the pleasant, avoiding the unpleasant, and ignoring the rest. This chapter covers negative bias, neurotransmitters and what they do.

If your true nature is lying in state, underneath it all, unchanging, and we have only to remove that which obscures it, then it will take time to become that which we already are. Chapter 1 in a sentence.

Pretty good so far. A scientists explanation of what happens in the brain when you meditate and how we can avoid the monkey brain.

Equanimity is not coldness, indifference, or apathy. You are present in the world but not upset by it. The spaciousness of equanimity is a great support for compassion, kindness, and joy at the happiness of others.

The brain has a negative focus which we have to overcome. I think Dr. Weil mentioned this when he talked about news junkies who have to watch the news because its SO NEGATIVE. This is bad for us and we have to overcome it.

Very interesting book, explaining the neuroscience of positive and negative experiences and their physiological effect on the body's systems, including why (and how) both stress and relaxation affect us. I always believed that there is a body-mind connection, and this book explains in detail why that is true. It gives the scientifically proven basis for it.

I wonder why it takes me so long to change old habits and begin to practice what I know is good medicine? Meditation time. Meditation time.

I have been slogging through this periodically. It started off very promising, echoing some of the lectures I've seen on TED and Coursera, but despite frequent academic citations, these last few chapters have gotten a little "out there". Still excited to finish it off and continue building the bridge between my spiritual and neurological interests :-)
