[…] Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism. Of these, science has engaged Buddhism the most. Like science, Buddhism encourages people to take nothing on faith alone and does not require a belief in God.

This kind of suffering— which encompasses most of our unhappiness and dissatisfaction—is constructed by the brain. It is made up.
Which is ironic, poignant— and supremely hopeful. For if the brain is the cause of suffering, it can also be its cure.

Only we humans worry about the future, regret the past, and blame ourselves for the present. We get frustrated when we can’t have what we want, and disappointed when what we like ends. We suffer that we suffer. We get upset about being in pain, angry about dying, sad about waking up sad yet another day.

What brain states underlie the mental states of happiness, love, and wisdom?
How can you use your mind to stimulate and strengthen these positive brain states?

really good advice about humbling ur reactions to things that happen throughout the day. realizing how much unnecessary frustration we put ourselves through for no reason, creating problems that don’t even need to exist

So I started reading this book for a class on mindfulness I took a year ago. At first, I really liked it because of how it blends neuroscience, psychology, and contemplative practice. From a research perspective, I appreciate how the author uses plenty of in-text citations to back up claims. However, it’s taking me so long to get through this book, in part because the meaning is lost in extraneous metaphors.

Being present here and now is a novelty to many people. I developed this skill as a parent and now as grandparent.

This chapter, in a sense, is how to not taking the bait. Frustrated people have the tendency of using others as emotional punching bags. It’s rarely a personal attack.
