Reads a little like a Jim Butcher Harry Dresden novel, but following a Nigerian demigod godling-hunter instead of a Chicago wizard, and forty-percent fewer quips. The world of near-Lagos is defining a little faster than Dresden's Chi-town. It definitely stands as its own property; this isn't a Butcher clone anymore than the resden books are Raymond Chandler clones. It's all first-person, private contractor work.

Hrm. Something about the pacing of the plot just isn't clicking with me. I feel like we haven't had enough plateau or build up - it's just one event after another, and not much character building happening. Additionally, there's a surprising lack of world-building where the overall community and day to day life is concerned.

Code switching in language! So cool to see this reflected in a fantasy novel. David Mogo speaks in heavy vernacular when talking to his adoptive father, but speaks "proper" English when conducting business with government folks and wizards.
Still not entirely sold on the plot overall, but at least the premise and world is still interesting.

A bit odd how the first-person narration is written in a Western style, but all the dialogue is spoken in the Nigerian dialect. It’s a bit jarring and somewhat off-putting, what with being unable to pick up much of the conversational nuances.

This book feels like a Philip Marlowe novel crossed with American Gods, set in Nigeria.
