Anyone knowledgeable enough in a godtongue to weave a story using one's oriki can weave a charm to affect their very character. Hence, why Nigerian mothers frown at kids who're too forthcoming: tell the wrong people enough about yourself, and they can harm you with your own name.

Unlike human mothers who harbour the regular amount of human godessence—which is only slightly more than the average plant or animal (except cats, of course)—my mother is a high god—well, was; I've never been sure which to use.

hmmm...I interpret this as a pro-C-A-T statement, which lowers the book in my esteem. I hope I'm wrong.

it's got some really long descriptive paragraphs and not enough character communication so far. like, the concept is great. yoruba people, orisha gods, all that good stuff. so much potential

also the writing is so-so but i'm hoping it gets better.
