I’m really enjoying this so far! Mary is a solid character and du Maurier’s descriptions of the moors are great! They give me such a vivid picture in my head as I’m reading.

The copy I'm reading has way more pages than what's on Goodreads.... I only just finished chapter 15 but I'll probably try to read the rest of the book later #speedrunner (I'm like the only one in class who likes the book and isnt horribly behind I swear....)

I'm subject tracking gender roles and there's so many examples that if I wrote them all down, I'd develop severe carpal tunnel...

But it seemed to Mary that years of fear and anxiety had taken away her powers floc concentration , and that some underlying terror prevented her from giving her whole interest to any conversation.

I don’t want to love like a woman or feel like a woman; Mr Davey, there’s pain that way, and suffering, and misery that can last a lifetime. I didn’t bargain for this, I don’t want it 😫

Mary is from Helstone! It made me think of Margret in North and South.

Liking Mary a lot - much different from the second Mrs De Winter but I think still realistic for the 19th century, so cool to see the variation in Du Mauriers MFCs. Maybe I’ll just finish it today we’ll see

I'm loving this - the brooding on the moors, the mystery around the Inn, the strength of Mary trying to deal with it all.
"Rebecca" was my first Daphne Du Maurier book and I loved it for similar reasons. Then I read My Cousin Rachel, which was meh, and then Hungry Hill, also meh. So I gave up reading her books. But I loved the BBC version of this book and decided to read it. I'm so glad I gave it a chance.
