Realized this was a first book to a sequel series and I haven’t started the first series...oops 🤦🏻‍♀️

Re-reading the first two books and then onto the final book in the trilogy.

WHAT THE HELL Michel?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

This book is going to be the death of me I don't know what direction is going in I just know that at this point in the cast of characters we have met I hate all of them but two and that is Ben and Vlora everyone else can just go away.

I don't know how this book is doing it but it's making me like Vlora and I'm not sure how I feel about that but I do know that Michel I genuinely have never hated a character more than I hate this man

Crisper writing than his previous series, which was excellent. This is even better.

A good prologue is a great way to set the stage for the story and to ignite the interest of the reader.

Really liking this one!

McClellan is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Love this book.

Great book! Loving it. I hope there are sequels to follow. Definitely like the author.

Shiiit, I've been listening to Blood of Empire.....

Listening to this with my boyfriend and we've been intrigued by it because there is a lot of really interesting things happening, but we just finished a chapter with a fight that we'd been anticipating since the book started and both of us were disappointed with how it played out. Hoping for the best with the second half!

One of Ben's men is killed to try and anger him, though why the bad guys play these games makes little sense. Or's wakes up. Hopefully Ben distracts bad guy, Or's kills him.

Vlora was not captured, but Lady Snowbitch politician shows up wanting to recall the army like they're not in the middle of a hostile country.

The spy guy is starting a revolution and is a bit worried now about it going bloody.

All Vlora's bodyguards happened to get killed too. So when she gets back to camp, surprise! Because no one would be following her every move even during the battle. I really hope I am wrong about her getting taken. If/when it happens it better end with her powder blindness going away.

After the enemy general and Vlora have a talk that includes them sharing a drink if one is captured Vlora gets stupid and attacks with her troops, so I totally expect her to get captured. They do a surprise night attack and see sorcery in the distance. Vlora assumes things are handled, but since she was almost killed in the attack and is acting stupid as hell I suspect things are not. And then she gets captured.

Pole's grandfather is evil and has unlocked the godstone so commences the purge. Pole is stronger so could kill him, but is spreading her power out instead to protect people. Of course.

Styke lands in hostile swamp territory with enemy soldiers on the way.

Tan meets up with Bravis & Poles sister. They are going to head back to the enemy HQ to save people.

Vlora is powder blind (for now?) from close call battle.

The end of this was fantastic, and a perfect culmination of all of the events of the book. Unlike the Promise of Blood where it took a while to pick up, this read was enjoyable start to finish. Characters are great, plot good, action fantastic. Brian McClellan has certainly grown in his craft and it shows in this first book. Now on to book 2!

Vlora noooo! Lindet was a terrible person anyway, but the stunt she pulled against Vlora in this final stretch...I hope she decides to do things on her own from now on. A huge character flaw for her has always been bad choices and lapses in judgement, so I hope she can overcome it after this last event. Also think I have an idea as to what the enemy is doing, but we'll see what happens in these last six chapters.

Talk about crazy escalations! The relationships in this book are so sweet, really nice to see the progression of them. Michel and his Mother are so nice, and so are vlora and Olem, and 2 other characters I can't name cuz major spoilers. But so happy to see the gang all develop after the Powder Mage trilogy into such dynamic, honorable people, can't wait to see them interact more as this crazyness continues.

Yay everyone is on the same page! For the most part. Vlora's interaction with a certain spoiler of a character was really nice, and I hope they get on the same page soon. But her and Ben teaming up is great, nervous about what will happen next, though. Such a good read, keeps me on my toes! Still so many mysteries ayaaah~

Ugh, I want everyone to band together already! Love Vlora so much, she's hands down my fav character in this, didn't expect to like her as much after reding the 1st series bbut she's so awesome! But geez this is getting crazy, tensions are running high and still so many mysteries to unfold...such a good 2nd half of the book! Nice to see old chars have their time to shine in this series, as s1 was Tamas' show.

Snaaap this stretch of the book is so action packed and so many reveals! Everything is making sense now, and Michel's reveals plot wise so far are the ones that made me gasp! The author shows how masterfully he plots out is world, just instantly kicking into high gear and it flowing as well as the setup and lulls. AHHHH so hyped to read the rest of this, so well done! Excited to see more cameos!

I forgot how much of a slow burn these books are but geez the plot just escalated! Poor Ben, feel for him but also not because this is all a mess. I have a guess as to who Mama Pallow is, we'll see if I'm right. Olem remains awesome, love seeing more depth to him and Vlora since I really liked them as side characters, so them as mains is epic. This house of cards is nuts though, can't wait to see what happens next!

The mysteries in this book are really interesting. This 1 is far more polished plot wise over the Powder Mage trilogy. Tampo is a really interesting character too, can't get a read on him. vlora and Olem are the pairing I didn't realize I needed, their love and support for 1 another is just so sweet and hearing more about it during the 11 year stretch before the book is great. Ice Baron is a fab character also

Vlora and Olem are beyond cute. It's nice to see them fleshed out a bit more after being minor characters in the 1st series, and seeing how their relationship flourished in 10 years is so sweet. Really great tie ins to the previous series, and the world building continues to be superb. Michel is the weakest link character wise: while I find his plot interesting, his talking to himself tick is kinda irritating.

Finally getting to this book after buying it on sale last year lol. Actually liking the setup for this 1 a lot more than in the Powder Mage series. Probs helps that I like all the main chars more, Vlora is a far more interesting Mc (couldn't stand Tamas). Only 1 I super liked was Adamat in series 1, so nice to like all 3 POVs and curious to see where this will go after all the setup - which was also well done.
