Status Updates From Magic Mansion

Two chapters in and we already have an admonishing bus shelter handjob between strangers and a literal cum butterfly. I am HOOKED.

Half rolling my eyes, half finally starting to enjoy it. I think it might just be Stockholm Syndrome.

Wait, how exactly does being sort-of-outed and definitely forced to face the death of your partner live on stage constitute a prize in this game? This show is wild and makes no fucking sense.

I'm verging on bored here, lads. There's a lot of telling and not a lot of story.

Oh my god, we get it, Muriel is fat. Jesus christ this book is obnoxious.

THE. RULES. OF. THIS. SHOW. ARE. SO. QUESTIONABLE.

Wait did? This book just casually slip in a week-long time skip as if I wouldn't notice? This is reality television, with regular public vote-offs, and you're telling me they just spent an entire week building cabinets and not one contestant did anything else or was voted off in that time? Sure.

This TV show is... very intense. There are extreme punishments every time a team loses a challenge, and now they're being asked to construct a very complex structure from scratch as if it's nothing. They're magicians, not builders. It's very weird.

I sort of just feel like I'm being told a bunch of information, rather than reading a story. It's fine, but... I used the word mediocre in one of my other updates and I think it's the perfect word to sum up this book. It's mediocre.

Some notes for later:
• This book is essentially mediocre fanfiction except we don't already know the characters.
• Does this author know how shows are filmed at all? Currently it's just like, two handheld cameras, and every single thing that happens, both cameras pan to it. General shots are just as important, that's literally why there are multiple cameras in the first place.

One of the things that's already bugging me is the sheer number of characters, but I've had a sneak peak in the About This Story section at the back, and the author also seems to be frustrated about this, so hopefully that'll diminish soon. (Although, honestly, you wrote it, why not start with 10 contestants rather than 12?)

The premise of this book is super cool but the writing just isn't great and it's really off-putting to read.

Did this book just describe an Asian woman's makeup as Oriental? It did.

This book is very... judgemental. It's in the third person so it can't even really be blamed on the character perspective. It just feels like any time a new character is introduced (especially if they're a minority in some way) they're described in way too much detail to the point where it becomes uncomfortable to read.
