I read and reread Felix Salten's "Bambi" as a kid, which is really an adult book. There's some heavy, and bleak, stuff in there...which I guess says something about me as a kid. LOL! Bambi's mother getting shot in the Disney version is just one of the dark moments in the novel. On a lighter note, I was very keen on Milne's Pooh books, and I loved the first two Dr. Dolittle books. Also, there was a series about a talking pig named Wilbur I think, and a series about a kid science prodigy "Danny Dunn." A transitional author from juvenile to adult writing for me was Ray Bradbury. He remains one of the most important in my development as a reader and a writer. Then, as a teenager, I really got into Edgar Rice Burroughs, particularly his inner earth and Venus series.
