Twice a surrogate 'stem cells' spokesperson for the White House, James ended five years of biotech activism in 2006 when he realized a strategy that had confused and divided Americans over stem cells was being used to promote global climate denial. He writes to entertain readers with books and novels that develop challenging concepts into fast-paced and socially relevant plots. Prior to a 1997 auto accident that left him paralyzed, James enjoyed a twenty-year railroad career, restoring antique furniture, and rambling over backcountry roads or forgotten trails from Colorado's gold rush. Today he lives near at the foot of Pikes Peak with Selene, his wife of twenty-eight years and his inspiration for Cassandra, the sibyl reborn. ...more

Good question...but it needs a complex answer. LOL!

As a kid, I found copies of Homer's "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey" in a closet, and of course I fell in love with their epic tales. I felt particularly bad for Cassandra, the tragic heroine of Troy who was cursed to be never believed when she told the truth. Fast forward to 1997...

After falling asleep while driving, I awoke from a coma to learn that I was paralyzed for life. As an occupational therapy, my wife suggested that I write a novel, so I thought, "Why not?"

In a way, I was as much to blame for my auto accident and injuries--I had continued to drive on an Interstate highway [out of sheer stubbornness] despite knowing that I was falling asleep--as were the leaders of Troy who had ignored Cassandra's warnings. Were humans and humanity thus fated to suffer forever, in big ways and small, over the foibles of our nature that poets of old had labeled "Cassandra's Curse"? I was stuck by a thought...

What if Cassandra reincarnates as a present-day environmentalist and remains disbelieved. Unlike her former "tragic' self, she refuses to be a victim? What if she casts a metaphysical 'spell' to explore the roots of her 'curse' with the aim of somehow breaking it? Naturally, the universe entangles karmas, lives, passions, and fates in response to her spell, giving her all that asks for but most definitely not what she expects or wants .

Albert Einstein
“A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”
