Jeff Hardesty was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. His mother was an elementary school teacher and his father was a business owner and remodeling extraordinaire. After twelve years of Catholic school Jeff went on to University of Louisville, where he eventually received his BA in English Literature and Writing.

Why eventually? After Jeff's junior year of college, he became concerned that classroom learning was not providing the interesting life experiences he would need to one day become a novelist. So, Jeff took a break from school and headed west (then back south two years later to finish school, then southeast, then back west, but not all the way west, then all the way west again.
