As a detective novel which occupies a crucial status in the Detective Fiction History, it owns a number of classic statements which can drive us into deep consideration.
The plot follows a nursery rhyme’s development, that is how ten Indian boys die one by one. Ten people, who have different background but all murdered without punishment, were summoned by Owen to Soldier Island. After dinner, a record was played, which accused ten people’s unknown crimes. Then they started to doubt others identity until two people were killed, suspicions are even stronger. Meanwhile, they found the connection between the shoulder models and the death of the people, they fell into deep fear. As they suspected the rest of people one by one, their suspicions were broken again and again. Finally, there were only two left. Woman killed the danger she thought, but after returning her room, she found and succumbed to her final destination just as the nursery rhyme said. There were ten corpses on the island, but the police had no clue.
The book has two sides. On the one hand, it has mystery color, which can draw people into its plot, and at the same time, it can arouse people’s deep thought through showing the real human nature. The whole passage describes the mental activity and physical activity of the people on the Soldier Island in a vivid way. For one thing, the mental activities of the ten different kinds of people all show people’s true attitude towards others lives and their owns. After being accused by the record, though one of them admitted his crime, he didn’t have any guilty to the dead due to him at all. While the other nine people not only had courage to admit their crimes, but also just wondered how others knew their mysteries and wanted to accuse others faults. This part shows the people’s selfish out of the heart, they always want to owe their faults to others. For another, when only two people left on the island, the woman use the other survivor’s gun to kill him without thinking this gay was always with her when the third person from the bottom was murdered. The almost instinctive response represents the woman’s sins, she doesn’t care about others lives, she only cares about herself. On the other hand, the whole passage is too romantic. After reading the book, I always consider that they found the connection between the soldier models on the centre of the table and their death, then if the soldier models wouldn’t decrease again, the people on the island may be still alive until being rescued. Besides this, if the people have realized the danger, why they don’t be together to save themselves. Based on the above, the book has too many questions that can’t be understood easily.
Above all, the book is extremely suitable for the people who enjoys the detective novels not only for its high reputation in mystery fiction, but also for its unbelievable and unrealistic killing methods. Besides, the novel is also a good choice for the person who enjoys analyzing human nature thanks to its number of inner descriptions and detailed descriptions of behavior. But as for the person concentrating on the facts, its unrealistic and incomprehensible details will drive him/her into crazy, thus, the book is not a fantastic choice for him/her. ...more "
