I had been attending at a Grammar School and it was my intention to try and work to become a doctor. However, away from school I was doing some work for a local butcher and in 1954 when meat rationing in England ended, the butchers were all keen to go back to doing their own slaughtering and I was asked if I wanted to go to the slaughterhouse with him. I did go and there were many parts that interested me, one of them being the man that was inspecting the meat and organs for evidence of disease or parasitic infestations. Eventually, against the wishes of my teachers and my parents I chose to leave school and become an apprentice butcher. I had agreed to go to college to study the subject in more detail and I did so.
