Why Good Taste Beats Almost Everything Else

From an article that has nothing to do with writing fiction, but somehow alsoeverything to do with writing fiction:

" The whole thing had the flavor of someone making it up as they go along, although not in a bad way. "

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry
"It's been at least 10 years since I read it, so I can't review it properly. I can say that I still remember parts of it quite clearly & the characterization was excellent. It seemed to me to represent the real Old West much better than most westerns." Read more of this review »

"My father in law suggested that I read this book. This book surprised me as to how much I liked it.

“1. Bullying is not okay. Period.

2. Freedom of religion does not give you the right to physically or verbally assault people.

3. If your sincerely-held religious beliefs require you to bully children, then your beliefs are fucked up.”

“You guys know about vampires? … You know, vampires have no reflections in a mirror? There’s this idea that monsters don’t have reflections in a mirror. And what I’ve always thought isn’t that monsters don’t have reflections in a mirror. It’s that if you want to make a human being into a monster, deny them, at the cultural level, any reflection of themselves. And growing up, I felt like a monster in some ways. I didn’t see myself reflected at all. I was like, “Yo, is something wrong with me? That the whole society seems to think that people like me don’t exist?" And part of what inspired me, was this deep desire that before I died, I would make a couple of mirrors. That I would make some mirrors so that kids like me might see themselves reflected back and might not feel so monstrous for it.”

“The world, after all, was still a place of bottomless horror. It was by no means a place of childlike simplicity where everything could be settled by a simple then-and-there decision.”

“What did he mean by "society"? The plural of human beings?”

“The weak fear happiness itself. They can harm themselves on cotton wool. Sometimes they are wounded even by happiness”

“Whenever I was asked what I wanted my first impulse was to answer "Nothing." The thought went through my mind that it didn't make any difference, that nothing was going to make me happy.”
Osamu Dazai, No Longer Human

Osamu Dazai
“In my case such an expression as 'to be fallen for' or even 'to be loved' is not in the least appropriate; perhaps it describes the situation more accurately to say that I was 'looked after.”
