michaela a. gabriel was born in an austrian small town in 1971. as soon as she could read and write, she spent huge amounts of her time doing just that. in her teens, like so many others, she began to write poems. but unlike so many others, she kept at it.

starting in her late teens, she occasionally switched to english, a language she has had an almost life-long love affair with. poems in her native german became fewer by the year, and for close to 15 years now english has been her exclusive poetry language. first publications in austrian magazines in the late 1980s were followed by international online publications when the internet opened up a whole new world, especially for someone living in a german-speaking country but writing in engl michaela a. gabriel was born in an austrian small town in 1971. as soon as she could read and write, she spent huge amounts of her time doing just that. in her teens, like so many others, she began to write poems. but unlike so many others, she kept at it.

very active in online poetry forums, michaela met poets from all over the world, and learned from many of them. She is eternally grateful for the wonderful opportunities the new medium opened up for her: early mentors, international friends and peers, access to online magazines and small presses.

over the years, many publications online and in print followed, poems were translated into other languages, and two chapbooks were published ("apples for adam" by foothills publishing and "the secret meanings of greek letters" by dancing girl press). a collaboration with alex stolis resulted in another chapbook, "small confessions and pebbles of regret", published by rubicon press.

rarely a prolific poet, michaela surprised herself by writing a poem a day for half a year and occasionally doing months of writing a poem a day in 2006/7. however, after writing more than ever in 2007, she was blocked for most of 2008 to 2010: too many difficult things going on in "real life", losing touch with the poet world, other priorities. 2011/12 saw her back at the computer typing away at new work and trying to finish her collection "elemental", one poem for each element in the periodic table.

burnout in 2013 was followed by a long desired pregnancy and the birth of her daughter in 2014. since then, not much has happened poetry-wise. a separation, two moves, one new love, one wedding and three stepchildren later, michaela now lives in a small town in lower austria, works with unemployed women, crochets, reads, and laughs a lot, invents stories for the two youngest kids, but writes very little. ...more
