Antony Millen is a Nova Scotian living and writing in New Zealand.

Originally from Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada, he moved to New Zealand with his wife and two children in 1997. He has lived in Taumarunui since then, working at St Patrick's Catholic Primary School and, more recently, as the head of the English department at Taumarunui High School.

During his early years in New Zealand, he wrote sporadically, but with a dream to write novels as a major part of his life-style if not as a career. In 2013, he launched his first novel, 'Redeeming Brother Murrihy: The River to Hiruharama'. He followed this with 'Te Kauhanga: A Tale of Space(s)' in 2014. 'The Chain' is his first novel intended for young adults.

After "Redeeming Brother Murrihy", I wanted to try things differently. Instead of narrating in the first person in the present tense, I switched to third person omniscient in the past tense. Instead of one character constantly travelling, I've told this story about three major characters, none of them leaving the confines of their small town. In fact, one character rarely leaves his house!

With the theme in mind, I read non-fiction treatises about space, including George Perec's "Species of Spaces." I've always been fascinated by the interaction of people within three dimensional space and imagine what a bird's eye view might look like - all of us creating paths that converge and diverge, sometimes surreptitiously, other times dramatically.

From there, I developed three characters, all with an exaggerated personality trait to do with space - a reclusive cartographer, a hoarder and a man obsessed with straight lines. Of course, then I threw in a debate about a tree, some legends, some history and a treasure hunt!(less)

Antony Millen That's cool P.D.R. I added books to them a while back, but never thought to ask others to vote for them on there.
