I always have several projects going on at once, so if I hit a dead end with one, I just change gears. A lot of times, that means changing genres, which helps me a lot.

Also, I remind myself that it's just a draft. Usually "writer's block" is just me being a perfectionist. I know what I want to say, I just don't know how best to say it yet.

The bottom line is that I don't stop writing. You have to keep the momentum going.(less)

I’ve learned a lot from being in an MFA program, but you don’t need a degree in writing in order to write well. You just need to read. A lot. Cancel your cable service and use that money to buy books. Then use the time you would have spent watching TV to actually read them. Read for pleasure, but if you like what you’re reading, slow down and think about what makes it work.(less)

I didn’t care for the first half of the book at all. The narrative voice was irritating, but once I got used to it, I appreciated the depth & insights of this book. Heavy on the philosophy, footnotes, & pretentious diction; light on action—especially ...more

I love most of Murakami's novels, but these short stories just didn't do it for me. They had the same style but without all the development that pulls you into his strange world. Some were pretty good, and I laughed out loud at least once. But I'd on ...more

The Elephant Vanishes by Haruki Murakami
"Some authors excel at writing novels. Others excel at the short form. A few are equally adept at writing novels and short stories. From my reading of The Elephant Vanishes, Haruki Murakami is not one of those people. Here’s why:
