I always have several projects going on at once, so if I hit a dead end with one, I just change gears. A lot of times, that means changing genres, which helps me a lot.

Also, I remind myself that it's just a draft. Usually "writer's block" is just me being a perfectionist. I know what I want to say, I just don't know how best to say it yet.

The bottom line is that I don't stop writing. You have to keep the momentum going.(less)

I’ve learned a lot from being in an MFA program, but you don’t need a degree in writing in order to write well. You just need to read. A lot. Cancel your cable service and use that money to buy books. Then use the time you would have spent watching TV to actually read them. Read for pleasure, but if you like what you’re reading, slow down and think about what makes it work.(less)

Apparently I previously rated this book 3 stars, but I don't think that's a fair reflection of its quality. 5 stars means "it was amazing," and that seems too positive of a descriptor for a memoir that is so dark.

But it is amazing. The best book abou

The first thing I disliked about this book was the structure. The second was the clumsy handling of time, which might be intentional but just made me hate reading. (I never DNF books, but I was very tempted. I had to know if the ending redeemed itsel ...more

"Anyway, let's bring in a large cast of characters with complicated relationships, speak vaguely about literally every god damn thing, and not explain what's going on or bother introducing the characters at all. This writing style drove me crazy."

"I know a lot of people seemed to enjoy this, and honestly? Good for them. But I had to tap out. Life’s too short to waste on books that feel like homework written by someone who’s allergic to plot.

I made it through 60% — barely — and that was pure wi" Read more of this review »
