I always have several projects going on at once, so if I hit a dead end with one, I just change gears. A lot of times, that means changing genres, which helps me a lot.

Also, I remind myself that it's just a draft. Usually "writer's block" is just me being a perfectionist. I know what I want to say, I just don't know how best to say it yet.

The bottom line is that I don't stop writing. You have to keep the momentum going.(less)

I’ve learned a lot from being in an MFA program, but you don’t need a degree in writing in order to write well. You just need to read. A lot. Cancel your cable service and use that money to buy books. Then use the time you would have spent watching TV to actually read them. Read for pleasure, but if you like what you’re reading, slow down and think about what makes it work.(less)

These Toxic Things by Rachel Howzell Hall
"Fuck this book.

The characters were mostly unlikable. The plot was predictable except for where it made no damn sense. There were too many side plots/stories that added nothing to the book. The main plot relied too much on stupidity to keep it moving." Read more of this review »
