"It's been slow going with this book, but that's largely because I don't like to feel outraged at new perspectives before I have a chance to process them. That's on me!

This is a good and important book. Still, the author is kind of a dick, and you can tell he's practiced in trolling NYT and New Yorker subscribers. It's a living!

He doesn't bother Atlantic subscribers though.
You just KNOW they eat this shit up."

Ron Stallworth
“The phone call ended, and we all started laughing. First they got their ideas about how to light a cross from a James Bond movie, and now they were bragging about secret handshakes. It was as if Dennis the Menace were running a hate group.”
Ron Stallworth, Black Klansman: Race, Hate, and the Undercover Investigation of a Lifetime

Thomas Olde Heuvelt
“A resignation had fallen over the townsfolk that Steve found even more uncanny than the earlier tension. They looked like people who knew they had done something dreadful, something irreversible … and something they could easily live with.”
Thomas Olde Heuvelt, Hex

“And the two colleagues are still hanging out together: Van Heusen is buried in the Sinatra family plot in Cathedral City, California.”
Ted Gioia, The Jazz Standards: A Guide to the Repertoire

“When the haughty Mussolini rose to deliver a speech, the main piazza was empty except for a collection of seedy beggars and village idiots collected by the mayor. At a reception in another town, despite the vigilance of his bodyguards, the Mafia managed to steal Mussolini’s hat.”
Selwyn Raab, Five Families: The Rise, Decline, and Resurgence of America's Most Powerful Mafia Empires

James Ellroy
“Hoffa said, “Fucking Jesus turned fish into bread, and that’s about the only thing I haven’t tried. I’ve spent six hundred grand on the primaries and bought every fucking cop and alderman and councilman and mayor and fucking grand juror and senator and judge and DA and fucking prosecutorial investigator who’d let me. I’m like Jesus trying to part the Red Fucking Sea and not getting no further than some motel on the beach.”
James Ellroy, American Tabloid
