E.J. Levy E.J. Levy said: " If Mrs. Dalloway had been written by a mid-century American misogynist, you’d get Mrs. Bridge. I’m amazed to see this praised in the 21st century (then again we’re dealing with the Dobbs decision, so). Having read a quarter of the novel, I’m unimpres ...more "

Stylish, deft, and charming, this clever, well paced novel is a quick read and a great study in craft. If the characters are rather two-dimensional, their author's skill in writing taut drama makes this a delight, nonetheless. Something like a Hockne ...more

“As a scholar, it was her job to see things in relationship to other things; the only thing she couldn't see in a relationship was herself.”
E.J. Levy, Love, in Theory: Ten Stories

“I could not help but wonder, then as now, When we look at a man or a woman, what is it that we see? We make too much of the difference: having been both, I can say the distinctions are both greater and less than they appear. As a surgeon, I can attest that once the skin is peeled back, the distinctions are few; save for the reproductive organs, one cannot tell man from woman—one cannot say, This is a woman’s brain or lungs, a man’s heart. They think and beat just the same.”
E.J. Levy, The Cape Doctor

“They did not take kindly to regulation, that enemy of self-serving charlatans everywhere.”
E.J. Levy, The Cape Doctor
