The setting of the book is morning school in Nebraska, United State. Some major character is Eleanor who is 16, living with her mother and stepfather. She is to herself, quiet, and very opinionated. Due to her problems in the past, Eleanor is very closed off. Eleanor's stepdad, Richie, is beyond evil—and his presence is so terrifying that it's felt in Eleanor's house even when he's not home, creating an atmosphere of constant fear. Eleanor's mom, Sabrina, is his primary victim. She's not easy to pin down. On the one hand, she's been treated horribly by both of her husbands. Park's not into sports, partying, girls, or the social scene at his school, and he's just popular enough not to get teased, and just different enough not to belong.
The conflict of the book is when Eleanor notices that Richie is becoming more and more aggressive towards her and her family. She keeps on receiving creepy notes and threats, and she starting to realize what is going on. It's been Richie the entire time. All along, it's been Richie trying to destroy her, etching away at her sanity bit by bit. When she finds out that he knows about Park she knows that she needs to leave as soon as possible.
This book made me remember of hardship people face in life and having to deal to deal everything that goes in the life. From the very first page I knew I would enjoy this book, even at this early stage the characters appeared perfectly cast and I could immediately identify with them. Shortly following, it appeared that Rowell had structured this book to be in both Eleanor's and Park's point of view. A better decision has never been made. Having the ability to switch between what both characters were feeling and their backgrounds made this book whole. Some romances can be very one sided and you read through it constantly having to guess about the secondary character; thus not developing as much a connection with them. However, both characters were so unique and well written that I felt personally intertwined between their story. I enjoy the author way of writing and flow of the story. Rainbow Rowell has truly outdone herself.
If you've experienced that first love, that heart-wringing, soul-squeezing, crushing the air out of your lungs, whoever was part of that first love,this book will slap your feels all to hell. ...more "
