Cast Long Shadows: 3 stars. I actually read this short story two years before reading Chain of Gold. My original thoughts were that it was wonderful to see the TID characters again, as I love them dearly. During that read I assumed James would be my favourite Last Hours character. I liked Lucie, and I strongly disliked Matthew Fairchild which in hindsight, is really funny because Matthew is absolutely my favourite, and I would die for that boy.

Every Exquisite Thing: 3.5 stars. I also read this two years ago, but I didn't write down my thoughts so I don't remember my thoughts on it other than that I liked Anna Lightwood.

Learn About Loss: 4 stars. This story was interesting enough but it didn't wow me. However I think the heart-warming scene with Will and Jem was incredibly sweet and meaningful. I loved it a lot, which is raising this from a 3.5 to a 4.

A Deeper Love: 5 stars. My favourite of the collection. This was so intense, in every way. It is set during a bombing in world war 2, and the whole story is essentially terror and heartbreak. The desperate, hopeless longing between Jem and Tessa is high in this story. This one actually made me cry, because Jem and Tessa own my heart and I could not handle them kissing but not being able to be together. Their love for each other and their love for Will is beautiful and honestly I don't think I could ever get tired of reading about it.

The Wicked Ones: 3 or 3.5 stars. I thought this story was interesting, though it wasn't anything incredible. It was cool to see a story set in the time of Valentine's rise to power. I haven't read the Bane Chronicles yet so I'm not sure if there are stories in that that take place during this time before Clary is born, but usually we only get to learn about this time through other characters telling us about it. It was interesting to read about a character mentioned in the Mortal Instruments that we really don't know that much about on a personal level, and I feel like I understand who she is now.

Son of the Dawn: 4 stars. It was really nice to see a young Jace in this story, he is very closed off and desperate to please though he pretends he isn't. At the very end we get a glimpse of him opening up to his new family, the Lightwoods, and it was very heartwarming. And getting to read from a child version of Isabelle was nice as well. This story also made me realize that I really like Lily- I didn't remember much about her from The Mortal Instruments to be honest, but she's quite fun and she left an impression on me this time.

The Land I Lost: 5 stars. I am a sucker for Alec Lightwood. I love him so much, and most of this story was told through his perspective which unfortunately as been rare through the Shadowhunter universe until more recently. This story had good action, heart, and the ending put a large smile on my face. Just another reminder of why Alec is one of my favourite characters from these books. I'm just so happy for him and the life he has made for himself, he is so heroic and selfless. He deserves all good things.

Through Blood, Through Fire: 4 stars. I really enjoyed this story, we see Tessa struggle with her shapeshifting abilities and Jem deal with the guilt of letting down a Herondale. We get to see the moment Tessa tells Jem she is pregnant, and the whole scene made me emotional. They're both so happy, and even though Tessa knows what she is putting herself through, the loss of more children when she inevitably outlives them, she is excited. The last paragraph killed me, not sure how I'll ever recover to be honest.

The Lost World: 4 stars. Our first look at what The Wicked Powers will hold for us. This was an interesting story and I'm excited to see the role Ty and Livvy will play in the future. Their new bond seems like it will be very fascinating and important in this next series. I also am looking forward to how Cassandra Clare fixes Ty and Kit's relationship after everything that happened in Queen of Air and Darkness.

Forever Fallen: 3 stars. I think since this is the last short story it could have been stronger to really hit home- I think the parts focused on Jem, Tessa, and Kit was really enjoyable but I think the parts about the Thule version of Jace felt out of place. It felt sort of tacked on, because Cassandra Clare wanted us to have this information going into the Wicked Powers to have a better understanding of Thule Jace but had nowhere to put it. Reading this made me realize I definitely need to reread the Dark Artifices before the Wicked Powers comes out 😂 But my general thought at the end of Queen of Air and Darkness was that I was not really looking forward to an alternate version of Jace interacting with everyone, and this story didn't do anything to help that. Everything else about the new series seems good: the son of the Seelie Queen, the First Heir, the effects of Ty's necromancy, what will happen with the world of the Shadowhunters when Zara and the others reveal their plans. But when the alternate version of Jace was revealed to be in their world with a plan to make Clary his, I'm pretty sure I remember rolling my eyes a little. I guess we'll see. Also, why the fuck did she name Thule Jace 'Janus'?? That is such a stupid name for him and I couldn't think of anything else while I was reading this. If she sticks with that name for the whole Wicked Powers series I will be furious. ...more "
