Ash Leigh O'Rourke grew up in North Texas believing books were as good as magic and losing herself in fictional worlds every chance she got. After growing up (at least physically) and moving around the country a bit, she finally returned to her home state where she currently lives with her husband and two insane felines. When not writing, she can be found hoarding candles and reading/editing for That Pretentious Book Club, a comedy podcast she co-hosts about books and nonsense, and The Scripturient Society, a podcast for writers. Follow her on social @ash_leigh_orourke or thatpretentiousbookclub.com ...more

When I hit writer's block that I can't overcome, I put down my writing for a week or so and pick up a book - or six. I read as much as I can, filling up on inspiration and looking over different examples of writing that truly flows (hopefully). Reading jump-starts my imagination so that when I go back to my writing my creative devices are already warmed up and ready to go.(less)

It allows you to be all the things you can't be in this life (a princess, a hero, etc). It allows you to see the world from mountaintops as far away as Mars - and farther if you want. This is nothing short of magic. (less)

Herman Melville
“Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people's hats off—then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can.”
Herman Melville, Moby-Dick
