I think that there were a few factors that truly motivated the main character. Melkorka, an Irish princess, was thrown into a completely different and dangerous situation. Throughout it seemed that her ambition started to disappear because there was no one to care about her anymore. In the very beginning of the book, she always seemed to base her actions off of her mother's expectations. This made me feel as if her first goal would be to always please her parents and to live up to their expectations. This seems to be one of the main sources of drive that Melkorka has. Once she was on the ship, she started to do things as people would expect of her, but I think she realized that people were not paying attention, causing her to question why she had to put in effort all of the time. To me, this went against the theme, and I think the author used this to contrast the differences between the characters from beginning to end. Her lack of motivation in the middle of the story made her realize that she needed to set her priorities straight, so she did things for herself and not for the sake of others. I think that was definitely one of the main morals of the book.

Why did you decide to read this text?
I decided to read this book because of the interesting storyline. I was first interested in this book because I like reading historical and historical fiction books. To me, it seems more interesting because these some of these events actually happened and it's really incredible to see how much people have evolved over time. After I read the blurb, I was more drawn in by the out of the ordinary plot. the majority of princesses stories (real and made up) have them living in castles with problems extremely less severe. However, this creates such a different environment that I was really curious to see how the other would let the situation affect the character. Being enslaved is a grueling event that contrasts with the everyday life of a princess, but to me, it opened my mind to how hard the lives of royalty back then could have actually been. The plot of this story itself (without even needing to read it) made me realize not to judge a book by its cover (figuratively and literally). ...more "
