Thanks for asking, Kaye.
The answer is - all over the place - one novel came from a dream, for example. Often, I have an idea about a character in a situation/scene and then have to write some pages to find out where it is going. Sometimes with short stories, I've entered a themed competition and found it a useful exercise to just daydream about the theme and try different thought experiments - and then something will gell. Or I get the beginning of something and have to start writing before things click into place. I may end up junking what I initially wrote, but by then I'm on the right track to continue. I'm quite instinctive with writing, and am a great believer in the power of the subconscious to come up with ideas and to resolve plot conundrums.(less)

November has rolled around again and usually I would be doing NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) which I first did in 2012 and apart from that year had ‘won’ ever since, either completing at least 50,000 words or, when being a ‘rebel’ and editing

A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett
"In a Nutshell: A children’s classic about a young girl and her fortitude in times of adversity. Overly perfect main character, decent story (though a bit too straightforward.) Many inclusions that haven’t aged well at all. This was a reread after man" Read more of this review »

This first in a police procedural series is a cut above some others I've read. The writing is fast paced and is immersive in the sense of getting into the viewpoints of the characters and making their experiences concrete and real. There is no unnece ...more

The Bone People by Keri Hulme
"In a Nutshell: A literary fiction about three broken people and their intersecting paths. Enjoyed the setting and the glimpses into indigenous Māori culture. Character-oriented and slow, which was fine for me. Stream of consciousness writing, poetic " Read more of this review »

This novella features both the wendigo, which is nastily invoked, and a were beast, so two for the price of one. As the story begins, Troy is driving through heavy snow to join the searchers who have been trying to find his sister and her daughter, C ...more

"Some types of hurt settle in your soul and haunt you from that day forward.

2.75 stars (no, I don't get it either, but it let's me round up to 3 without too much regret). Candace Nola's "Bishop" is an interesting cryptid-esque tale about loss, surviva" Read more of this review »

This gave me vibes of The Shining by Stephen King, but definitely only a lite version. When the present day story opens, Lively Deadmarsh, ex-CSIS, is travelling through a snow storm in Canada to reach a hotel, boarded up since over a hundred people ...more
