A good novel but unfortunately the weakest of the series so far. I loved all of the previous three entries for their excellent portrayal of natural history, dragons as realistic animals, set against adventurous backdrops and a woman's scientific jour ...more

A nice and easy read while also quite flawed. I was intrigued by the premise for a while, and while often described as a mix of sci fi and romance, the time travel element is not particularly sci fi like, the focus is of course on the romance.

Reread this for the first time in probably 15 years, and I'm happy to say it's still as great as I remember. Wildly inventive and cleverly playing with all types of fantasy cliches, this is a properly original novel.

I have some mixed feelings about this novel. It is beautifully written, drew me in immediately and was always an engaging read. On the other hand, once I reached the end, it left me a bit cold. There is very little of a plot, instead telling four int ...more

Another great novel by Nino Haratischwili. Arguably even her best work I've read so far - more focused than The Eighth Life, less melodramatic than The Cat and the General, this story about four friends living through the post-Soviet upheavals and tr ...more

An excellent novel, an existentialist fable that stubbornly refuses to give you any answers. Which very much feels like the point - in my reading, the book is about finding meaning and purpose in an absurd nihilist world, and it does so beautifully. ...more

"You have to read with the idea that this novel is plotless. The richness of the book lies in its prose and the description of the universe.

Many things about this book shouldn't work. It is an exploration of grief, a story of a hawk, a bit of a history of falconry, a biography of TH White - but for me the seemingly disparate elements worked really well and came together into a meditative ...more

By far the weakest of the trilogy, unfortunately. After the first two books, I was excited to see how the story would continue in the present day, how the Crakers would evolve and deal with the humans alongside them, how Jimmy would integrate with th ...more

Sometimes with classics, you know so much about them that you feel like there's no need to read them - I've seen movie adaptations, studied the themes in school, many scenes have entered public consciousness - and then you finally read it and realise ...more
