If I'm having trouble coming up with the next scene, I work on something else and let my subconcious work on it in the background for a few weeks or months. It's something I do when I start drafting a new story as well. I outline and maybe start writing, and then I set it aside for a few months.(less)

Go through lists of new books online or check them out in bookstores to see what sorts of books are selling now. If you see, for example, a bunch of post-apocalyptic sci-fi on the shelves, you can probably shelve your similar story for a while and wait for that trend to come around again.(less)

New novel, April 16

My newest LGBTQ novel, THE MIRACULOUS LIFE OF RUPERT ROCKET, is publishing in a few weeks, and it's currently available for preorder at major online booksellers (including my publisher, rebelsatori.com). It's a modern fairytale in the style of magical realism inspired by Sleeping Beauty by the Brothers Grimm. The epic story spans 78 years and 3 generations of a German-American family in Wisconsin Read more of this blog post »

The Miraculous Life of Rupert Rocket by Mark Salzwedel
“There are still so many Americans who think they don’t know any gay people. That makes it especially vital for us entertainers to do it. The only issue is that this is not just my secret anymore. If I come out, you’re inevitably going to come out, too.”

“Rupert stood there for a moment. He took inventory of what sort of life he was stepping back into. His friends were still there, except for Dorian. His apartment was still there, Danny said. His job was gone, according to Arthur and Hakim. And he had been just an observer from the sidelines for more than a half a year, trying every day to entertain and manipulate the guards and other prisoners into leaving him alone and not hassling him. He realized he had become accustomed to seeing everyone and every new environment he entered as a potential threat.”
Mark Salzwedel, The Miraculous Life of Rupert Rocket

“The error in fabrication had been traced to a synthesized tissue sample sent to Genstar weeks before whose base pairs were purposefully arranged to install a computer virus as a result of being sequenced.”
Mark Salzwedel, The Lever

“Clarissa shuffled toward the ellipse that framed the nighttime view of the Earth. They seemed to be passing over China, but then a dark shadow broke the familiar coastline and then completely obscured it. Her body became taut and her reflexes quick. She turned her implant on to attune her hearing to the tiniest sounds.”

“After ten minutes with no young people in gray coveralls with weapons entering, Shonda tried to blend in more, as if she were shopping. She wandered down the aisles trying to look indecisive for almost an hour. She found the extreme heights of cakes and breads possible at such a low gravity engaging for a few minutes. Several unmarked bins full of strange produce that could have been grains or nuts kept her attention for a few more.”

“When you look at it from the big picture,” Arthur said, “your life isn’t that different from mine. I’ve had my ups and downs, my victories and disappointments too. Normal is overrated.”
