"Despite its name, this is not really for spoken Chinese — many words are incredibly formal and literature. Still good to learn the characters but this is going to be the last book I'm taking in this series." Oct 13, 2022 05:06AM

"Looking forward to ending this. While I appreciate the positive and stoic attitude, whole chapters turn into turns into a long summaries and pointless rambles on families co-lived with — their son this, their daughter that — etc. One big mash-mash of names that makes for a read arousing little interest." “This sentence has five words. Here are five more words. Five-word sentences are fine. But several together become monotonous. Listen to what is happening. The writing is getting boring. The sound of it drones. It’s like a stuck record. The ear demands some variety. Now listen. I vary the sentence length, and I create music. Music. The writing sings. It has a pleasant rhythm, a lilt, a harmony. I use short sentences. And I use sentences of medium length. And sometimes, when I am certain the reader is rested, I will engage him with a sentence of considerable length, a sentence that burns with energy and builds with all the impetus of a crescendo, the roll of the drums, the crash of the cymbals–sounds that say listen to this, it is important.”

“Every one of us is, in the cosmic perspective, precious. If a human disagrees with you, let him live. In a hundred billion galaxies, you will not find another.”
Carl Sagan, Cosmos

“Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it.”
