Thanks to my grandmother, Nancy Woollcott Smith, I started out in life with the delusion that writing was a thing grown-ups did. Becoming a writer seemed almost as realistic an ambition as becoming an accountant, though less lucrative. That delusion led me to a couple of decades of irregular and mostly profitless work, but it's also kept me going.

In high school I wrote two novels with a friend. We passed chapters back and forth in between classes. They were written on paper, the first book long-hand, the second on computer. That was before the internet. During the fall and winter after I graduated from college, I wrote a novella/poetry collection, still unpublishable or at least unmarketable. I sent it to about a half dozen agents and colle

What I have instead is a feeling of resistance, needing to get a big boost of energy to get started when my energy is low. Caffiene and/or chocolate can help with that. Then sometimes I'm just too tired and/or scattered to write anything serious, so I read instead, or take a walk.

I've heard other writers say that writing gives them energy, but that is not how I experience it. When I'm really in the zone, I need a nap afterwards! (less)

Hello Veronica,

Thank you for your review, and also for posting it beyond LibraryThing!

I cannot remember a time when I did not known the song "Eddystone Light." We used to sing around the fire it at family picnics when I was a kid, and I remember some debates about lyrics. I believe my relatives picked it up from a Burl Ives record they listened to in the 1950s and 60s, before I was born.

I never lost my interest in folk ballads and sung stories. As I was messing around as a writer, I thought it would be fun to try to put together a collection of short stories based on or inspired by folk songs. I started with this one, and it grew from a short story into a novella through several drafts and a couple of rounds of beta reader feedback.

I have a lot of non-folksong projects on my agenda right now, but I may turn back to this idea in the future.

Again, thank you for your review, and for your question.

This felt like a throwback to a bygone era -- yes, the world of early 1970s sci fi, but there was also something Victorian about it, reminiscent of pre-WWI fantasy stories.
I had mixed feelings about it, but on the whole it was worth reading.

Thought-provoking but a bit full of itself.
This is an interesting book, and I'm glad that I read it, but as with many how-to-type nonfiction books, it could have been an article, and suffered a bit from the usual problem: What's good in it isn't new

I'm tempted to give this 2*. Let's call it a 2.5. It was one of those books where I probably should have given up on it from the start, but kept going out of laziness.
I think this would be an okay YA book, if you were coming in with low expectations

“Tiada was all colors of the rainbow and of fire. She swooped low, churning the clouds in her wake, making a hard rain fall out over the bay. The dragon’s light warmed Darna, and though Tiada flew back behind the cloud cover, for a moment Darna felt that all was right with the world.”
Amelia Smith, Scrapplings

“She didn’t want to be one of the dragon-blind, even if it meant a life of comfortable imprisonment. No. Besides, the whole idea was absurd.”
Amelia Smith, Scrapplings

“Darna felt the breath stolen from her lungs. The prince looked at her. He looked with a kind of desire, as if this kitchen girl had suddenly turned into some piece of iron with mystic powers. Darna could not breathe.”
Amelia Smith, Scrapplings

“How vain it is to sit down to write when you have not stood up to live.”

“Writing isn't about making money, getting famous, getting dates, getting laid, or making friends. In the end, it's about enriching the lives of those who will read your work, and enriching your own life, as well. It's about getting up, getting well, and getting over. Getting happy, okay? Getting happy.”
Stephen King, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft

“A little talent is a good thing to have if you want to be a writer. But the only real requirement is the ability to remember every scar.”
Stephen King
