"In the milieu of "achievement society", I'm reading this book for a distraction...The book has been interesting, it captures the anxiety and depression that came with freedom in modernity. I used to like existentialist ideas, but now I'm not sure for many reasons. We are often told (and telling ourselves) to dream big and make a big difference, but I'm exhausted to the bone. I hope to get some insights from this." Dec 13, 2025 09:31AM

Fyodor Dostoevsky
“Above all, don't lie to yourself. The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. And having no respect he ceases to love.”
Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

Fyodor Dostoevsky
“What is hell? I maintain that it is the suffering of being unable to love.”
Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

Milan Kundera
“A person who longs to leave the place where he lives is an unhappy person.”
Milan Kundera, The Unbearable Lightness of Being

Voltaire
“I have wanted to kill myself a hundred times, but somehow I am still in love with life. This ridiculous weakness is perhaps one of our more stupid melancholy propensities, for is there anything more stupid than to be eager to go on carrying a burden which one would gladly throw away, to loathe one’s very being and yet to hold it fast, to fondle the snake that devours us until it has eaten our hearts away?”
Voltaire, Candide, or, Optimism

Søren Kierkegaard
“What I really need is to get clear about what I must do, not what I must know, except insofar as knowledge must precede every act. What matters is to find a purpose, to see what it really is that God wills that I shall do; the crucial thing is to find a truth which is truth for me, to find the idea for which I am willing to live and die.”
Soren Kierkegaard
