I liked this, but at probably a 3.66 star level of like. Which means 3 stars.

I'm guessing this was a novel that didn't quite work and the pieces that did work were recovered and rebuilt as three connected novellas? I base that on how this reads, an i

It would be weird for me to venture an opinion about a book like this.

I mean it's good, but I wouldn't want to make it about me, or to be precise my opinion,

So that was pretty fantastic. I mean, I certainly invested a lot of time in finishing it.

A bit Lovecraftian and Hyborian, a whiff of Gaiman's American Gods. A fair amount like Birmingham's Emergence stuff.

I'm appalled at how I wasn't tipped off at wh

That ending was a bit searing, really.

Sometimes I wonder what the deal is with my taste for books that lean towards bad for the characters. It's not a horror thing, because I don't like horror. But here we are, an emotionally devastating end after w

It was ok. It's a script and scripts are better acted than read.

I think it's interesting to compare this as an officially sanctioned adaption of an existing literary milieu compared to Modern Day Harry Potter.

Cursed Child is largely indistinguishabl

Look, I'm not saying my brain is full of visions of Bronzepunk, camel- and horse-mounted, leather-and-chains-and-spikes be-suited road warriors ravaging Egypt, Mycenae, Crete, Cyprus, and Near-Eastern regions, imploring your Rameseses and your Ammura ...more

“Well, here we are. Let’s change. Let’s change the world. Together.” “You sound like my father.” “Your father wants the gods back on their pedestals. I want us working as one: humans with Craft, gods with divine power, priests with Applied Theology. But we need space to build that society. We need the time and the power to change, and we’ll never have that time or power with Craftsmen crushing us. We need freedom, and I can win that freedom. Not in a decade or three. Today. In one stroke.” “You want a moderate revolution. You just need to kill a few people first.” “A few people. Yes. To free a city. To save a planet. Dresediel Lex will be a model for the world.” “I kind of like it the way it is.”
Max Gladstone, Two Serpents Rise

“You’re talking as if this is an opportunity.” “It is. You asked me for an answer, last night. This is it. RKC is dead. Let it rot. Build something new.”

“Cosca smiled up at the dragon, hands on hips. ‘It certainly is a remarkable curiosity. A magnificent relic. But against what is already boiling across the plains? The legion of the dumb? The merchants and farmers and makers of trifles and filers of papers? The infinite tide of greedy little people?’ He waved his hat towards the dragon. ‘Such things as this are worthless as a cow against a swarm of ants. There will be no place in the world to come for the magical, the mysterious, the strange. They will come to your sacred places and build . . . tailors’ shops. And dry-goods emporia. And lawyers’ offices. They will make of them bland copies of everywhere else.’ The old mercenary scratched thoughtfully at his rashy neck. ‘You can wish it were not so. I wish it were not so. But it is so. I tire of lost causes. The time of men like me is passing. The time of men like you?’ He wiped a little blood from under his fingernails. ‘So long passed it might as well have never been.”
Joe Abercrombie, Red Country
