The darker tone we have of ICGYTM with nightclubs and ring fights, it feels as if we get that because of the things Chanel has experienced compared to Alice, whose sole purpose was to earn the title of valedictorian in the lighter toned ICYSTS.

Chanel was a queen as per usual. We got the tiniest glimpses of her in IYCSTS, but thank god we had this whole novel with her as a main character. There was so much to explore with her, like the aftermath of her father’s decision and the weight of being a beloved it girl. It was a rollercoaster seeing how her parents marriage and her friends’ relationships have shaped her image of love. She’s separated it so much from herself that it makes the angst?pain? hurt so much more with Ares, considering he’s the first one that’s seen her for Chanel. Not Chanel Cao, our darling (basically guaranteed) prom queen, but just simply, Chanel. The whole thing with enemies to lovers where the characters love each other despite seeing the other’s worst qualities is somewhat reciprocated here. But instead of seeing the worst, we get to see Ares falling in love with who Chanel is at her core, not the persona she shoves to the public. Then of course, with Ares, it somehow fit perfectly with his personality that he’s an acts of service type of guy. Like yes I want a man who can cook, a man who can carry my stuff, a man who can remember where my things are for me because I have goldfish memory (no, i’m not projecting, but where can I find an ares yin :(( )

AND WE HAVE TO MENTION OUR POWER COUPLE. THE OG ANN COUPLE. OUR BEIJING GHOST AND KING HENRY ASKJFNAKJSNF. Seeing Alice from Chanel’s POV, seeing how our invisible academic girlie has finally settled into herself and is far more confident in her abilities feels like a nostalgic punch to the face. It makes me wanna read IYCSTS and ICGYTM one after the other, just to see the immense growth that Alice has.
