This may well be true. The problem, as we can see in the current administrations of both the UK and the US, is that politics then attracts people without admirable beliefs and values. Men who will run on a platform of no torture simply because they think that will get them elected. Who will sanction torture without a second thought because it's politically expedient. And who will happily pretend their hands are clean
