I'm a freelance science and technology editor and writer, covering everything from cloud computing to planetary science.

I also have a big interest in archaeology, but now my studies are moving toward how past climate change has influenced human development.

I live in the Highlands of Scotland where I run the world's largest online science fiction and fantasy community at sffchronicles.com.

Now posting harsher ratings

From now on I'm going to be a little more harsh with my ratings. I figure the following is a decent scale:

5: Excellent! Everyone must read! I probably will again at some point.
4: Very good. I will recommend this to people who like this sort of book.
3: Average. Nothing to really shout about or recommend.
2: Poor. I managed to finish this book, but there were too many flaws for me to really enjoy it. Read more of this blog post »

After Going Postal I had high expectations for Making Money, but ended up disappointed. Whereas Moist von Lipwig had driven the story in the previous book, in this one he simply gets dragged into one situation after another where he doesn't really do ...more

Re-read this, and it was interesting to see how strong the emotional stakes were from the start. As a story I thought it good and strong with the caveat that I never believed the kids seemed as young as they were - or why it had to be children in thi ...more

When I originally read Terry Pratchett, I remembered Going Postal and Making Money as the author at the height of his creative powers. After some disappointment with recent Pratchett books I wasn't sure what to expect. However, Going Postal still del ...more

Finished reading The Truth by Terry Pratchett. Like Small Gods it sagged in the second half with too much chatter, though not as much. Even still, these books seemed more juvenile this time around and neither as funny nor as intelligent as I remember ...more
The Black Swan of Paris by Karen Robards
"A fantastic historical fiction book. Set in Paris 1944. The Nazi's occupy Paris. The atmosphere of the city is fearful, no one trusts a fellow Parisian. Meanwhile the Resistence is tasked with trying to help the Allies with their D-day landing.

Half a King by Joe Abercrombie
"Definitely noticeable change of tone from Abercrombie’s regular more “grim dark” content. The characters still have a degree of moral ambiguity but the content itself (in terms of sex/violence etc.) is much milder than the various First Law novels. T" Read more of this review »
The Wrong Stars by Tim Pratt
"Didn't finish this novel despite it was fast paced and not dense, challenging SF read. It started decently, had interestingly weird alien culture of the Liars. The huge flaw was that the leading human characters was dull version of the crew in The Fir" Read more of this review »

I remember enjoying this book a lot when I was younger, and for the first half of the book I wasn't disappointed.

“Books are the perfect entertainment: no commercials, no batteries, hours of enjoyment for each dollar spent. What I wonder is why everybody doesn't carry a book around for those inevitable dead spots in life.”
